The Chapel on the Cliffs

By Joseph Crawford

Goblin Stone

5E  3rd level

Premise: It’s been fifty years since the curse struck Kennmouth. Since then, few have dared brave the dangers of the abandoned village, but even fewer came back in one piece.

What do we get here?

Over 35 pages you get everything you need to run this adventure, you get the village itself as well as all the necessary background and set up.

 Usability/Formatting

There are some lovely maps with this adventure that fit in very nicely with the style of official 5E adventures. In general the art and graphic design is really nice here, this looks like a premium product.

For the most part this is as well set out as you will find for a 5E adventure. The problem is that the word count could probably cut down a fair amount in places by streamlining the presentation of information. Apparently this was originally an adventure build in Basic D&D then converted to 5E for publishing, I really would have liked to see the Basic version.

Issues with formatting aside, which are really only nit picks anyway, this is a very easy adventure to run which has some nice unique mechanics for the village beset by the undead. While this is labelled as as a 3rd level adventure it actually comes with a pdf which scales everything for you so you can run this adventure at 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th level which is super helpful and a lot of bang for your buck!

 Portability

The setting is generic enough it should be easy to plop this down in any existing campaign world or your own homebrew world. There is even a nice little box which calls out the names that you will need to change to help you with slotting this into your own setting. Combined with the scaling pdf I can really appreciate the thought that has been put into making this a really flexible adventure.

 Recommendation

Despite wishing the writing was a bit more streamlined I really recommend this adventure. It explores some classic themes and has plenty of different routes for the players to go down as they try to figure out exactly what happened. There is some variety in hooks and more than enough scope to put your own in or tie the whole adventure to one of your players backstories.

This is exactly the scope and scale of adventure I like and would want to slot into an ongoing campaign or sandbox environment. Well worth the $4.95 it costs.
