That's no cave! & Geldradin

That's No Cave!

By Oyvind Paulsen

One page dungeon contest 2022

No system or level given.

Premise: Strange magical energies are coming from a near by cave, go check it out.

What do we get here?

A single page gives 14 keyed locations.

 Usability/formatting

This is your classic spaceship in a fantasy setting style adventure which will instantly make it divisive.

The writing is decent, gives you a good understanding of the room in the opening lines and expands information further into the paragraph as you will likely need it. While the opening caves portion is a bit linear the ship itself has something of a loop to it.

Nothing much is described in the way of treasure, I am sure you can figure out your own sci-fi devices to give away as treasure though. There is a decent amount of interactivity and some option for faction play if you go a little beyond what is in the writing.

Portability

You need to be okay with putting sci-fi in your fantasy or at least some weird other planar stuff.

Recommendation

If this is to your taste it is a decent little adventure you should have no problems running, it may benefit from being expanded a little though.

Geldradin

By Zo Tchangov

One page dungeon contest 2022

No system or level given.

Premise: A wheat transporter is beefing with a miner at the entrance to a gonzo excavation.

What do we get here?

A single page gives 6 keyed locations.

 Usability/formatting

I really love the art for this one, it is totally evocative and completely out there!

This is another entry from a child so the writing needs to be given a bit of leeway. That being said the situations created in the various caves offer a lot more than most of the hack and slash entrants in the contest this year. There is a sleeping giant, a mimic, a dragon with glasses, a dwarf rave and more!

If you like gonzo or want a gonzo one shot to run then fill your boots with this one man. Sure it is a bit liner but who cares with all the stuff to poke around with here.

Portability

Your setting does need to support dwarf raves to run this adventure, so that may be something you struggle to over come.

Recommendation

Definitely a fun little adventure for those who like things out there!

The Vault of the Three Fingered Flame

By Scott Jarvis

One page dungeon contest 2022

No system or level given.

Premise: A recently emerged vault has already taken the lives of a bunch of would be tomb robbers, will you fare better?

What do we get here?

A single page gives us five keyed locations.

 Usability/formatting

We start off badly with the writing for this one which has a double negative in the first room. Otherwise it is fairly easy to discern what is going on from the text.

There are a lot of combat encounters and not much else here, all the halls have a random combat encounter as does making noise, this one could turn out to be a grind. Some more interactivity or traps is what is missing.

Depending what system you play this in it could be a pretty punishing adventure as the big bad is a save or take 1d6 permanent loss to one of your mental stats!

Portability

Obviously this is a sci-fi type adventure although I think it would be pretty easy to reskin for a slightly more fantasy setting.

Recommendation

Doesn't look fun and seems way too harsh.

Hunck's Hobby

By Colin Lammie

One page dungeon contest 2022

No system or level given.

Premise: Stumbling through the woods the characters find respite at a campfire and cabin with two gnomes, or do they?

What do we get here?

A single page gives us about three or four locations.

 Usability/formatting

If you ever wanted to play that scene in The Road where they find a bunch of people being kept for food then you found the thing for it.

To be honest the writing is not great here, the details are not connected clearly enough for the referee to run the adventure it gets a little confusing in places as to who the NPCs are exactly. Some of the sample dialogue for Hunck is pretty nice in terms of helping you grok his character.

All in all this is a voyage into the macabre that needs unpicking more to be able to run.

Portability

As long as you don't mind the macabre at your table I suppose this is fairly portable.

Recommendation

I think it needs expanding a bit to run and will definitely not fit at every table given the subject matter.

The B Section & The Jester's Wondrous Cave

The B Section

By Jacob Cordeiro

One page dungeon contest 2022

No system or level given.

Premise: Pass through a piano inspired corridor.

What do we get here?

A single page gives an encounter literally run on piano keys.

 Usability/formatting

For the musically inclined this adventure might work better, for me who has no real knowledge of music or piano playing this is a flat note.

The set up is just a bit too restrictive as the author notes themselves meaning you end up with a pretty linear encounter.

There is nothing in the way of treasure, loops or faction play which really limits this. Relying so heavily on a gimmick means it is very easy to miss the mark with a lot of people. For example the suggestion you get your players to sing in key with the key they are on just is not going to work with a lot of groups.

Portability

To start with you need a piano or a keyboard, then you need a world this would fit in so not very portable.

Recommendation

Not for me, too gimmicky and not a gimmick I could connect with.

The Jester's Wondrous Cave

By Pawel Kieman/Heltung Storytelling

One page dungeon contest 2022

No system or level given.

Premise: Enter caverns in a place between dimensions at the end of worlds.

What do we get here?

A single page gives 7 keyed locations.

 Usability/formatting

This adventure is pretty well laid out and written. Information is colour coded and terse so you can easily find what you need to run a room.

I like the set up, it is very gonzo but does a decent job of being an outside the universe type adventure. Where it falls sort is on the lack of the jester himself, I would have like to have seen that played up a little more to keep the theme going.

Overall there is a decent amount to do, explore and interact with. Hard to find too many faults here. Some treasure would not go amiss if you were looking for stuff to add.

The hand-wavy end of the adventure is a little annoying however I think you can work with it.

Portability

If you need something for players that have entered a portal, fallen out of the universe or found themselves in some sort of purgatory then this should work well.

Recommendation

You will probably need a specific circumstance to run this adventure or to use it as a one shot, worth keeping in mind as it should be plenty of fun when you do finally have cause to pull it out.

Squirrel Planet & Titan's Hammer

It would be nice to be done with this year's one page dungeon contest so time to start upping the number of adventures reviewed per day.

Squirrel Planet

By Lina, Hendrik, Joaquin, Herr Zinnling

One page dungeon contest 2022

No system or level given.

Premise: Go through a dungeon to either get turned into a squirrel or sent back to your home planet.

What do we get here?

A single page gives 5 keyed locations.

 Usability/formatting

Designed by kids and formatted by dad it is difficult to be too harsh on this one.

That being said there is not much to this one and while applaud the efforts of kids to design stuff this is not something you would want to seriously run.

The dad did add in something to make things a little less linear which is something.

Portability

You'll have to figure out some monster stats and might want a sci-fi type setting to run this one in.

Recommendation

I hate to say it but no thanks.

Titan's Hammer

By Gareth Den

One page dungeon contest 2022

No system or level given.

Premise: Explore a missile silo filled with goblins and a necromancer.

What do we get here?

A single page gives 5(?) rooms to explore.

 Usability/formatting

I'm not sure if this is an adventure designed by a kid or someone doing something in the style of one. Either way this is a pretty gonzo effort that will definitely find a home at the right table. The odd mix of fantasy and thermonuclear weapons is certainly something.

The hand writing is a little hard to read, if you can look past that you should be fine.

When it comes to the design this is definitely a bonkers set up but it has a decent amount of ways to explore the location and a bunch of stuff to interact with. Surprisingly good for what it is.

Portability

You have to run this as a one shot or have a pretty gonzo world to fit it in.

Recommendation

I definitely think you could have some fun with this as long as you have a light-hearted campaign/table going on.

Galaxy Quest

By Bralex Adley

One page dungeon contest 2022

No system or level given.

Premise: Welcome aboard, captain! You have taken command of a space cruiser and have made the very first intergalactic space jump in human history. You now find yourself in the Helion Galaxy with just your ship, your wits, and your loyal crew

What do we get here?

A single page gives us a board game not an adventure.

 Usability/formatting

Much like The Cardinal's Guardsmen this is another board game snuck into the adventure contest.

As this is not even trying to be an adventure I will not get into reviewing it much more other than to say it does not work on a computer monitor, you need a tablet or print out to even hope to use this thing. If you can not rotate it is impossible to read half the spaces on the board.

Portability

It is not an adventure so maybe but also not at all.

Recommendation

Stop putting your board games in contests for adventures.

Green knight (new class)

Wardens of the forest the green knights are neutral paladins and as such are build on the chassis of the paladin class. To play a green knight adjust the paladin class for Old School Essentials as follows:

Alignment: A green knight must be neutral. If the character’s alignment ever changes (for any reason), they lose all class abilities and become a fighter of the same level. The referee may allow the character to perform a quest of atonement in order to regain their status as a green knight.

Divine Magic: Green knights draw from the druid spell list instead of the cleric spell list.

Nature's Champion (replaces Warhorse)

A green knight of 4th level or higher may summon a steed of the forest—a stag with AC 5 [14], 5+5 HD, and a movement rate of 180’ (60’). If the stag dies, another may not be summoned for 10 years.

Regeneration (replaces Lay on Hands)

Once per day, a green knight can regenerate 2 hit points per level. Additionally, a green knight of 5th level of higher may once a week spend a turn to re-attach a limb.

After Reaching 9th Level

With the permission of the natural spirits of their forest, a green knight can build a woodland hermitage and control the surrounding lands. The green knight may be granted a title such as Defender of the forest. Lesser spirits of the forest will now aid the green knight as servants.

Vow of Humility

A green knight may keep only a total of one suit of magical armour, one magical shield, and one magical melee weapon. They must also donate 10% of all income to the spirits of the forest.

What form the spirits of the forest take is up to the referee, suitable options could be a talking tree, a noble fae creature or spirit of a pond/lake.

In all other regards a green knight is identical to a paladin.
